AQUACULTURE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

    Summer 2018/19

 

 

We are seeking an intern in our finfish aquaculture operation for the summer

  • Are you studying or have recently completed a marine science, environmental, aquaculture or related degree?

 

Indian Ocean Fresh Australia Ltd (IOFA) are seeking an intern from December 2018 for 2/3 months to join us in our Geraldton based aquaculture operation.

 

What will you do?

  • You will be involved in daily farm operations whilst undertaking a suitable research project in the finfish aquaculture field.

  • You have the opportunity to assist with; and observe daily fish farm operations and paid work.

  • You will have access to experienced aquaculture staff and scientists.

 

What sort of research?

Depending on your area of study, a selection of projects will be available for you to discuss with our team to best offer you some real experience in your field of interest, whilst also contributing some meaningful outcomes to our operation.

This may be around marine science, environmental work, fish health and biology as well as data management.

 

Who will assist with research and how will it work?

The IOFA Technical Manager, an experienced Marine Scientist in the field of Aquaculture, will work with the Intern and be involved with planning, reviewing and ensuring the intern’s research programme and goals are being achieved.  

The RWP will have monthly progress reporting requirements together with set milestones and achievements to ensure research work goals set are being met and any assistance required is being sought during the programme timeframes.

 

A liaison team at IOFA will be available to supervise operational work duties and the research project.

The intern will have access to IOFA office facilities and resources to carry out research work.

About Us

We are an established marine finfish aquaculture operation in the Midwest of WA.  Our fish are grown in sea cages in the ocean.  We are a dedicated bunch of people that have a range of skills from vessel driving, farm maintenance, diving and highly specialised fish health and technical skills.  We are a small team with a broad variety of tasks so we value people who are prepared to ‘have a go’.

Geraldton, Western Australia

Geraldton is located 450km north of Perth and is surrounded by great beaches.

The city offers all the lifestyle benefits of a small city combined with the friendly feel of a country town.

The position is based in Geraldton and some flexibility in time is provided to travel (i.e. if based in Perth)

 

Yellowtail Kingfish – Seriola Ialandi

Yellowtail Kingfish (YTK) occurs naturally in tropical and temperate waters of the southern hemisphere and the northern Pacific. Our Yellowtail Kingfish are grown in the oceanic waters of the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Geraldton, Western Australia. Geraldton Kingfish are now catching the attention of quality seafood distributors and discerning chefs.

 

Does this cost anything?

No; this will not cost you anything.  IOFA will cover the research expenses (materials, resources etc.).

You will have to cover your living expenses as accommodation is not provided, although we can assist you with finding somewhere. 

 

Is there an opportunity for some paid work?

YES. There is the opportunity for some paid work

IOFA may provide up to 20 hours per week paid work at entry Level 1 Aquaculture Attendant, (with casual loading as applicable and some weekend work), depending on relevant qualifications.

We have an employment application process that you will need to undergo if you wish to gain paid work.

We also have a thorough induction process to ensure your safety and that of our existing team.

 

How much time will this take?

A time commitment of 2-3 months is desired for meaningful research outcomes to be achieved.

It is envisaged the internship’s combined time commitment (research and work programme) would consist of 38 to 40 hours per week (average). This includes hours allocated to both research project activities AND any paid work.

 

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a person who is comfortable being on the ocean (good days and not so good days)

Personal safety awareness and physical fitness are critical.
