There are three main species of fish caught off the West
Australian coast in the Indian Ocean. These are Bigeye and
Yellowfin Tuna and Broadbill Swordfish. The main method of
capture is longlining which is a target specific fishing method.
Longlining ensures the highest quality of fish is landed.
All the vessels handle the product carefully and ensure it
is chilled immediately after capture and on board processing
to maximize freshness.
The vessels work any number of days at sea between 5 and
12 ensuring that the products have will have a long shelf
life at their destination markets.
All fish are dispatched on the day of unloading at the packing
factory in order to meet airline deadlines for flights to
Japan, USA and Europe.
There are a number of other species also caught whilst longlining,
although in much lesser amounts. These include Albacore Tuna,
Southern Bluefin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Escolar, Rays Bream and
Blue Sharks.
