The Bigeye Tuna inhabits oceanic waters, generally well offshore.
Is found the full length of the West Australian coastline
with a tendency to prefer the cooler waters of the southern
section of the state. Can occur in schools. Distinguished
by larger eye in proportion to body in comparison with other
tuna. The dark red flesh of the Bigeye Tuna is prized in sashimi
markets such as Japan, especially if the fish has good fat
content, which usually occurs in the winter months.
Most Bigeye caught in WA is in the range of 20 to 50 kg.
